Art and Heritage in Reims
The centre of Reims is an open-air Art Deco museum. Many of the buildings destroyed in the First World War were rebuilt in the 1920s, inspired by this new artistic style. Not to be missed: the Reims Opera house, the Halles du Boulingrin where the city’s largest market takes place, Carnegie Library, named after the American steel magnate, and much more.
Parcours Lalique in Aÿ-Champagne: the art of crystal and the life of this world-famous master glass-maker in the heart of the Champagne vineyards.
Great History
- Notre-Dame Cathedral: the site of most royal coronations, from Charles the Simple in 893 to Charles X in 1825. The city’s royal connections date back to the baptism of Clovis by Saint Rémi on Christmas Eve 498. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral is a jewel of Gothic art, famous for its light and sculptures, with no fewer than 2,303 figures on its façade. The view over the city of Reims from its towers is breathtaking.
- Saint Rémi Basilica: this is where Clovis was baptised. The basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site includes the basilica, a magnificent combination of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, and the museum.
- Palais du Tau: a UNESCO World Heritage site, the former residence of the archbishop where festivities were held following a royal coronation, is now a museum showcasing the cathedral's treasures.
- Remembrance tourism: Museum of the Surrender of 7 May 1945, a guided tour of Fort de la Pompelle, a major site of resistance that remained in the hands of the Allies during the 1914-1918 war; the Chemin des Dames, and much more.
Champagne: land of French excellence
Champagne can also be discovered by following the Champagne Route which for the past seventy years has allowed visitors to discover its vineyards, villages and prestigious estates. Whatever the season, its ancient landscapes offer a magnificent range of colours with roads that wind their way among the vines, hillsides and champagne houses. Take time to meet some of the independent winemakers, men and women devoted to the land and their profession.
Every year, professionals, amateurs and winemakers come together to celebrate the Route du Champagne en fête.
Great outdoors
The Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park: at the gateway to the city, it offers a wide selection of walks, some of which that offer the chance to admire the site of Les Faux de Verzy.
Local festivities and festivals
- Regalia Illuminations: every summer, a multimedia show is projected onto the façade of Reims Cathedral or the Saint Rémi Basilica.
- Fêtes Johanniques: in June, the population pays tribute to Joan of Arc, who had Charles VII crowned in Reims in 1429.
- Christmas Market: from 24 November 2024 to 24 December 2024, the third largest Christmas Market in France.
